Overview

Route 53

Our proposals

We review the bus network regularly to ensure services remain efficient, safe, and reliable for our customers.

We have developed a proposal for route 53 that would:

  • Change route 53 to no longer run between Whitehall and County Hall
  • Renumber the night service as N53 but otherwise not change the night service
  • Reduce frequencies on route 53 from every 7.5 minutes to every 8 minutes whilst retaining an additional westbound journey in the morning

Why are we proposing this?

Route 53 runs between Whitehall and Plumstead. It parallels route 453 between Whitehall and Deptford.

The proposals terminate route 53 at Westminster Bridge Road rather than continuing to Whitehall. Many buses service this section of the route, which has led to excess capacity and unreliability. With these changes there would still be over 50 buses per hour crossing Westminster Bridge between Whitehall (with 76 serving Whitehall), providing appropriate capacity for this area.

We would also reduce frequencies on route 53 from every 7.5 minutes to every 8 minutes, whilst retaining an additional west bound journey in the morning to provide sufficient capacity during the peak hour.

A summary of our analysis of this route and the data supporting the case for change can be found here in the Central London bus services supporting material.

How will this affect my journey?

Route 453 parallels route 53 from Deptford Bridge to Whitehall. Our customers crossing Westminster Bridge to Whitehall can change at Deptford or New Cross on to the 453 or other similar routes to continue their journey.

Our Hopper fare ensures there is no additional fare for making this change within one hour.

When would these changes start?

We will review and use the feedback from this consultation to help inform and shape these proposals. We may decide to change our proposals in light of comments or we may decide to go ahead as proposed. However, if we significantly revise our proposals we will run a new consultation to find out what people think.

If we go ahead with these proposals, they would be introduced in early 2019.

Route 3

Our proposals

We review the bus network regularly to ensure services remain efficient, safe and reliable for our customers.

We have developed a proposal for route 3 that would:

  • Change route 3 by stopping it at Whitehall Place instead of Trafalgar Square. Route N3 would remain the same as now

Why are we proposing this?

We need to free up bus standing space in Trafalgar Square for another route. Few customers use these stops to board and alight so our proposals would have a low impact on our customers.

A summary of our analysis of this route and the data supporting the case for change can be found here in the Central London bus services supporting material.

How will this affect my journey?

Route 3 would run via Whitehall Northumberland. The first stop would be at the stand on Whitehall Place which will be converted to a live stand.

The proposed route change is a short distance from the original start and destination point of the route, which is 321 metres away. Alternatively, customers can change to routes 159 or 453 to continue their journey from Whitehall to Cockspur Street.
