Closed 17 Jan 2016

Opened 23 Nov 2015

Results Updated 18 Mar 2016

We received 312 responses to the consultation. 310 responses were from members of the public and 2 were from key stakeholders. Thanks to all those who provided their views - we appreciate your patience in waiting for our response.

91 per cent of the responses supported or partially supported the proposals, 6 per cent said they did not support the proposals and a combined 3 per cent did not answer, were not sure, or did not have an opinion.

We have considered all of the responses and have decided to proceed with our proposals to run route 35 as a 24 hours a day service and to increase the frequency each night. Route N35 will no longer run.

We plan to introduce the changes from 30 April 2016, when new hybrid buses will also be operated on the route.

Background

The London bus network is kept under regular review. We have developed proposals to introduce a 24 hour service on route 35 and asked to hear your views.

Route 35 runs daily between Shoreditch High Street and Clapham Junction serving London Bridge, Elephant & Castle and Brixton. Buses run, every 10 minutes during the day on Mondays to Saturdays and every 15 minutes each evening and all day on Sundays.

Route N35 runs every night between Tottenham Court Road and Clapham Junction serving  Holborn, Old Street, Shoreditch and then as day route 35 to Clapham. Buses run every 12 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights and every 30 minutes Sunday to Thursday nights.

What we proposed

We proposed making route 35 run 24 hours a day between Shoreditch and Clapham. Route N35 would no longer run.

On Friday and Saturday nights  it would run every 7 to 8 minutes from Shoreditch as far as Brixton, and then every 15 minutes beyond Brixton to Clapham Junction. On Sunday to Thursday nights buses would run every 20 minutes.

We did not propose any changes to the daytime frequency of route 35.

Why we proposed this

Demand has continued to grow for route N35, particularly between Shoreditch and Brixton. Since 2010 demand has increased by over 70% on Friday nights to over 3,500 trips and by 75% on Saturday nights to over 4,000 trips. As a result, not everyone can get on the bus when they turn up.

The current section of route N35 between Tottenham Court Road and Old Street would continue to be served by routes N55 and 243 at night, on which there is spare capacity to accommodate all displaced passengers.

Around 160 passengers would need to change bus at Old Street / Shoreditch during the week and around 400 at weekends if the proposal is implemented. However, over 860 passengers during the week and over 2300 passengers at weekends would benefit from a more frequent service on the new night service on our proposed 24 hour a day route 35.

We did consider just increasing the frequency of route N35, but this would have provided too many buses on the Tottenham Court Road – Shoreditch and Brixton – Clapham sections of the route, where the extra capacity would not be required.

This consultation is part of the process which fulfils the requirement for TfL to consult under Section 183 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999.
