Bus routes 22, C2 and N22

Overview

We want to make sure our bus services can match future demand in the best way possible. We regularly review how bus services are used, and as part of this process we have developed proposals for changes to C2 and 22/N22.

We need to make sure that the bus network is providing the best service possible for passengers in the most cost effective way.

Our proposals

C2 - We propose that buses only run to Regent Street, Conduit Street. Route C2 would no longer run between Victoria and Regent Street. Our proposals for route 22 would partially replace the C2 between Piccadilly and Regent Street.

Shortening the route will ensure we can run it more reliably. Buses would use the stand in Conduit Street currently used by route 3 buses (which we propose to re-route to Russell Square).

There would be no change to current frequencies. At the moment buses run between Parliament Hill Fields and Victoria Station, with buses about every 8-9 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 10 minutes Sundays and all evenings. Buses run every 30 minutes each night of the week.

22/N22 - We propose to reroute buses to Oxford Circus. Buses would serve Berkeley Square, Conduit Street and Regent Street. In part, this would replace connections lost with our proposed changes to route C2.

There would be no change to current frequencies. At the moment buses run between Putney Common and Piccadilly every six minutes during peak times and about every eight to nine minutes Monday to Saturday at other times. Each evening and on Sunday’s buses run every 10 minutes.

How would these proposals change my journey?

These proposals form part of a wider package of changes to bus services in Central London. The proposals for routes 3, 6, 8, 15, 22, 23, 25, 46, 73, 137, 172, 242, 332, 390, 425, 452, C2, N2, N3, N8, N15, N22 and N73 take account of Mayoral commitments about Oxford Street, in addition to current and future changes in the number of customers using each bus route, journey times, and where people are travelling to and from.

Our proposals would mean new customer journeys are available between Sloane Square and Oxford Street. This change would provide new local connections between Sloane Square, Sloane Street and Oxford Street. It would also increase available stand capacity at Victoria, which could be used for future changes.

This would provide a direct link between Putney, Kings Road, Piccadilly, Berkeley Square and Oxford Circus.

Route 19 would continue to provide connections between Sloane Square, Piccadilly and, Holborn, while route 137 would continue to provide a link between Sloane Square, Hyde Park Corner and Marble Arch / Park Lane.

Our proposals take into account the downward trends with regard to numbers of customers using each bus route, as well as journey times, and where people are traveling to and from.  We have also considered the potential impact of new developments (including Elizabeth line) in the area and the aspirations of our stakeholders, for example the impact of bus traffic in the West End. Around 860 weekday customers would need to change bus from route 22 if we changed where buses go.

The Hopper fare will automatically be given to anyone who uses pay as you go with Oyster cards or contactless payments and will allow customers to make an additional bus journey for free within one hour of touching in on the first bus.
