Bus routes 6, 15 and N15

Closed 29 Jan 2017

Opened 25 Nov 2016

Overview

We want to make sure our bus services can match future demand in the best way possible. We regularly review how bus services are used, and as part of this process we have developed proposals for changes to routes 6, 15 and N15.

We need to make sure that the bus network is providing the best service possible for passengers in the most cost effective way.

Our proposals

6 - We propose to reroute buses to serve Park Lane and Piccadilly instead of Oxford Street and Regent Street. Buses would continue to run between Aldwych and Willesden.

Our proposals would provide new passenger links between Willesden, Edgware Road, Park Lane, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square and Aldwych. In particular passengers would be able to travel between Park Lane and Piccadilly directly for the first time by bus. Routes 7, 98 and N7 would continue to provide a direct service between Edgware Road and Oxford Street. Route 23 would also continue to provide a direct service linking Edgware Road with Oxford Street and Regent Street until late 2019. Please visit https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/bus-routes-23-46-332-and-452 for our proposals for route 23.

There would be no change to current frequencies. At the moment buses run between Willesden bus garage and Aldwych serving Kensal Rise, Edgware Road, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

Since January 2015, buses have been running at a slightly reduced frequency of every seven to eight minutes instead of every six minutes during the day on Mondays to Saturdays. This is to improve reliability and reduce congestion while roadworks and regeneration have been underway in the Regent Street area. As this better matches demand, we intend to make this revised frequency permeant. Buses continue to run every 10 minutes during evenings and all day on Sunday, every 15 minutes on Sunday to Thursday nights, and every 12 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights.

15 - Buses on this route have been temporarily starting and finishing at Trafalgar Square instead of Regent Street since May 2013 due to roadworks and traffic congestion. We propose that the route would start and finish at Trafalgar Square permanently.

There would be no change to current frequencies. At the moment buses run between Blackwall station and Trafalgar Square serving Limehouse, Aldgate, The Tower, St Paul’s and Aldwych. Buses run every eight minutes during the day on Sundays to Fridays, about every seven minutes during Saturday daytime and every ten minutes during evenings.

N15 - Buses on this route have also been temporarily starting and finishing at Trafalgar Square instead of Regent Street since May 2013. Route N15 is no longer subject to the same congestion issues as route 15 and we therefore propose extending it to Oxford Circus to provide new night time links.

There would be no change to current frequencies. At the moment buses run between Romford and Trafalgar Square, serving Becontree Heath, Barking, Upton Park, Limehouse, Aldgate, The Tower, St Paul’s and Aldwych. Buses would continue to run every ten minutes during Sunday to Thursday nights and every seven to eight minutes during Friday and Saturday nights

How would these proposals change my journey?

These proposals form part of a wider package of changes to bus services in Central London. The proposals for routes 3, 6, 8, 15, 22, 23, 25, 46, 73, 137, 172, 242, 332, 390, 425, 452, C2, N2, N3, N8, N15, N22 and N73 take account of Mayoral commitments about Oxford Street, in addition to current and future changes in the number of customers using each bus route, journey times, and where people are travelling to and from.

Under these proposals, customers wishing to travel to destinations between Trafalgar Square and Regent Street who did so on route 15 prior to May 2013 would need to continue to change buses to continue their journey. Customers can continue to make use of other high frequency routes to complete their journey.

Around 1,700 weekday customers would need to change bus from route 6 if we changed where buses go. While we recognise that rerouting the service would mean that some people need to catch two buses to complete their journey, we feel the benefits of reduced the numbers of buses along Oxford Street while providing new connections for Park Lane are a better use of resources.

The Hopper fare will automatically be given to anyone who uses pay as you go with Oyster cards or contactless payments and will allow customers to make an additional bus journey for free within one hour of touching in on the first bus.

In May 2013 routes 15 and N15 were withdrawn between Regent Street and Trafalgar Square to improve reliability and reduce congestion while regeneration and road works were underway in the area.
