The phased implementation of the extensions to routes EL1 and EL3 has now changed, due to delays in completing the new infrastructure:

On 18 February 2017 we:

  • Converted route 387 to East London Transit (ELT) route EL3
  • Started introduction of ELT branded new Euro VI  hybrid double-deck buses on both routes EL1 and EL3
  • Re-routed route EL3 to run through Barking town centre
  • Increased the frequency of route EL3 to a bus every 10 minutes Monday to Friday daytimes (previously every 12 minutes)

From 11 September 2017 we will:

  • Extend route EL1 from Mallards Road to serve the Riverside Campus school in Fielders Crescent* between 06:00 and 21:00 Monday to Friday

From Summer 2018 (dates to be confirmed) we will:

  • Further extend route EL1 from the Riverside Campus school to Northgate Road**, at all times
  • Re-route and extend route EL3 from River Road via Thames Road, Creek Road, Long Reach Road, Crossness Road, Minter Road, Handley Page Road, Mallards Road, River Road and Fielders Crescent* to Northgate Road**. Buses will no longer serve the section of Thames Road between Creek Road and Marine Drive or parts of River Road and Long Reach Road

* previously referred to as Drovers Road
** previously referred to as Crown Street

We undertook a consultation between 17 June and 14 August 2016 which looked at proposals to extend route EL1 and rename and restructure route 387, which would become EL3. We proposed that both routes would travel via new roads to a new terminus at Barking Riverside Development and the frequency of buses on route EL3 (387) would be increased.

We also proposed that route EL3 (387) would be rerouted through Barking town centre to make journeys more direct.

We received 253 responses from members of the public to the consultation, of which 158 (63 per cent) supported or partially supported the proposed changes to route EL1 and 165 (65 per cent) supported or partially supported the proposed changes to route 387.

After considering all of the feedback received, we have decided to proceed with implementing the changes as originally proposed. Implementation of the changes will be done in phases as and when key infrastructure becomes available.

The phased implementation is planned as follows:

From 18 February 2017:

  • Conversion of route 387 to East London Transit (ELT) route EL3 with phased introduction of branded New Routemasters on both routes EL1 and EL3
  • No change to the routeing of EL1
  • EL3 routed through Barking town centre
  • No other changes to the routeing of the EL3 e.g. in the Thames Road area
  • Route EL3 increased in frequency to a bus every 10 minutes Monday to Friday daytimes

From 2 September 2017:

  • Extension of route EL1 to Barking Riverside (Crown Street) via Drovers Road to serve the opening of the new school
  • EL3 routed from River Road via Thames Road, Creek Road, Long Reach Road, Crossness Road, Handley Page Road, Mallards Road, River Road, Drovers Road to the new stand at Crown Street. This is dependent upon the bridge works being completed on time

Overview

The London bus network is kept under regular review. As part of this, we develop proposals for changes to services.

Barking Riverside is changing significantly and will eventually see 10,900 new homes. Phase 1 of the development around Galleons Drive and Minter Road is nearing completion. Phase 2 of the development around Drovers Road will begin to open throughout 2017. Initially it will consist of a school campus and approximately 500 homes.

We are working closely with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the Developer to provide bus services for these new developments.

Route EL1 is a 24-hour bus route which runs between Ilford Town Centre and Barking Reach every 6 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 10 minutes in the evening and on Sundays. Buses run every 30 minutes throughout the night.

Route 387 runs between Little Heath (King George Hospital) and Barking Reach every 12 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 20 minutes on Sundays and all evenings.

What are we proposing?

We are proposing the following change to route EL1:

  • Extend route EL1 from its current terminus near Mallards Road to a new terminus near Drovers Road in the Barking Riverside development. The routeing would use new roads currently being constructed. This would link Thames View Estate with the new school

We are proposing the following changes to change route 387 to route EL3:

  • Re-route 387 through Barking town centre along the more direct bus-only roads used by East London Transit routes, to improve journey times and reliability for passengers.
  • Re-route 387 at River Road in both directions to run via Thames Road, Creek Road, Long Reach Road and new roads within Barking Riverside to a new terminus near Drovers Road. This would allow it to serve the new school and housing. Buses would no longer serve the section of Thames Road between the junctions with Creek Road and Marine Drive.
  • Route 387 would be renamed EL3 making it part of the East London Transit network that uses roads with higher levels of bus priority.
  • The daytime frequency of the EL3 would increase to a bus every 10 minutes on Monday to Friday.
