Update ends

Update 10 March 2016

Following requests, we have extended the consultation by one week. The deadline for comments is now Sunday 20 March 2016.

Update ends

The London bus network is kept under regular review. As part of this, we develop proposals for changes to services.

Orpington Town Centre is served by 17 bus routes. A full review of all bus services in this area has been carried out. Our review has taken into account reliability, the usage and connectivity in and around Orpington.

As a result, we are proposing changes to routes R1, R2, R3, R7 and R11.

The proposals outlined aim to:

  • Improve reliability
  • Provide sufficient buses to meet demand
  • Provide quicker journey times through re-routeing the R1, R3 and R7
  • Increase the frequency of route R7
  • Increase the frequency of route R11
  • Introduce a Sunday service on route R7
  • Provide new links from Chelsfield Village, Chislehurst and Bickley
  • Provide new links from Tower Road

What we proposed

As a result of this review we have developed proposals for changes to the bus network in Orpington and we asked for your views:

In summary:

  • Route R1 (Green Street Green – Grovelands) will continue to run between Green Street Green and Grovelands. We proposed a minor re-route from Repton Road to run via Tower Road, Station Road, Station approach and Orpington Station in both directions. Monday to Saturday daytime frequencies will be reduced to every 20 minutes.
  • Route R2 (Biggin Hill Valley – Petts Wood Station) would run between Biggin Hill Valley and Orpington Town Centre. It will no longer run between Orpington and Petts Wood.
  • Route R3 (Locksbottom – Chelsfield Village) will be re-routed from Orpington Station to Orpington Hospital via Tower Road. It will no longer run between Orpington and Chelsfield Village. Also, it will run via Amherst Drive instead of Poverest Road. Monday to Saturday daytime frequencies will be increased to every 20 minutes. Evening and Sunday frequencies will be increased to every 30 minutes.
  • Route R7 (Orpington – Bickley) will be extended from Bickley to Chislehurst War Memorial and extended from Orpington to Chelsfield Village. Monday to Saturday daytime frequencies will increase to every 30 minutes. We will introduce an hourly Sunday service.
  • Route R11 (Sidcup, Queen Marys Hospital – Green Street Green) will continue to run between Queen Mary’s Hospital and Green Street Green. It will no longer serve Edgington Way, Sidcup Tesco and Orpington Hospital. Monday to Saturday daytime frequencies will be increased to every 12 minutes. Evening and Sunday frequencies would be increased to every 20 minutes.

Detailed proposals

Bus route R1
We proposed to change route R1 in the Orpington area by using Tower Road, providing new links and a more direct and quicker service to and from Orpington station. It will no longer serve the northern section of Sevenoaks Road; routes 358, R7 and R11 would still serve this section of road.

Buses from Green Street Green will be rerouted from Repton Road via Tower Road and Station Road to existing routeing. Buses from Grovelands will be rerouted after serving Orpington Station via Tower Road and Repton Road to existing routeing.

We proposed to reduce the Monday to Saturday daytime frequency from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes. We also proposed to increase the frequency of route R11 which will provide additional capacity between St Mary Cray and Orpington. Together these will provide sufficient buses to meet current demand on all parts of the R1. Buses on the R1 will continue to run every 20 minutes during evenings and every 30 minutes during Sundays.

Bus route R2
We proposed to shorten the route so that it will run between Biggin Hill Valley and Orpington Town Centre. This will allow us to provide a more reliable service. The route will no longer serve Orpington High Street (north of the Walnuts Centre), Lower Road, Amherst Drive, Petts Wood Road and Petts Wood Station. Instead the proposed extension of route R3 will provide these links and with a more frequent service.

Towards Orpington Town Centre, buses would follow the current route via Station Road and High Street. The first and last stop will be Orpington Police Station. Buses will then continue from Gravel Pit Way, Spur Road and Station Road to existing routeing.

Buses will continue to run every 30 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays.

Bus route R3
We proposed to shorten this route so that it will run between Princess Royal University Hospital and Orpington Hospital running via Tower Road. This will provide new connections including links between: Princess Royal University Hospital and Orpington Hospital, Orpington Station and Orpington Hospital as well as providing new connections to Tower Road.

As we propose to shorten the route, we expect the reliability of the service to improve. We also  proposed diverting the route via Amherst Drive instead of Poverest Road. This will follow the existing route R2 in the area which is proposed to run only between Biggin Hill Valley and Orpington Town Centre.

Route R3 will no longer run between Orpington and Chelsfield Village. Charterhouse Road, Court Road, Warren Road, Bucks Cross Road, Maypole Road and Hewitts Road will no longer be served. The proposed extension of route R7 will cover these roads.

Towards Orpington Hospital the route will run as now into Orpington station. From Station Road it will run via Tower Road and Sevenoaks Road to Orpington Hospital.

We proposed to increase the frequency during Monday to Saturday daytimes from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes. Evening and Sunday frequency would increase from every 60 minutes to every 30 minutes.

Bus route R7
We proposed to extend the route at the northern end from Bickley to Chislehurst War Memorial and at the southern end from Orpington to Chelsfield Village. The extension to Chelsfield Village will run via the existing route R3, which is proposed to run between Princess Royal University Hospital and Orpington Hospital.

Towards Chelsfield buses will run from Royal Parade via Bromley Road, Summer Hill, Bickley Park Road, Blackbrook Lane, Barfield Road and Golf Road (Aquila Estate). The service will then run as now to Station Road and then via High Street, Homefield Rise (for the Walnuts Centre), High Street, Sevenoaks Road, Charterhouse Road, Court Road and Warren Road.

Towards Chislehurst War Memorial buses will run from Warren Road via Bucks Cross Road, Maypole Road, Hewitts Road, Court Road, Charterhouse Road, Sevenoaks Road, High Street, Homefield Rise (for the Walnuts Centre), High Street, Station Road then existing route R7 to Aquila Estate then Barfield Road, Blackbrook Lane, Bickley Park Road, Summer Hill, Bromley Road and Royal Parade.

We proposed to increase the frequency during Monday to Saturday daytimes from every 70 minutes to every 30 minutes. We will also introduce an hourly Sunday service.

This provides a range of new connections and will allow us to offer a more frequent and more reliable service.

Bus route R11
We proposed to run this route more directly to provide quicker journey times. Between Sidcup Hill and St Paul’s Cray we proposed to run buses directly via Cray Road, thus no longer serving Edgington Way and Sidcup Tesco. Route 321 will continue to serve Edgington Way and Sidcup Tesco. Between Orpington and Green Street Green we proposed to run buses directly via Sevenoaks Road, no longer serving Orpington Hospital, which will be served by the proposed reroute of route R3.

We proposed to increase the frequency during Monday to Saturday daytimes from every 15 minutes to every 12 minutes. Evening and Sunday frequency will increase from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes.
