Bus service proposal: route 488

Closed 20 Nov 2009

Opened 9 Oct 2009

Results Updated 26 May 2011

From Saturday 4 June 2011 route 488 will be extended to Dalston Junction station serving the Shacklewell area. Also from this day, buses on route 76 will serve Englefield Road in both directions where new bus stops have been introduced.

The extension to route 488 from Clapton to Dalston Junction station will provide a bus service for the first time along parks of Kenninghall Road, Rendlesham Road and Downs Road. The service will improve links for passengers between Dalston, Clapton and Homerton Hospital. Passengers will also be able to access London Overground services from Dalston Kingsland, Dalston Junction and Hackney Wick stations.

The enclosed leaflet will be available at various public buildings in the Dalston area. Notices will also be put on lamp standards on the roads not currently served by buses informing the community of the improved bus service.

We conducted a public consultation about changes to route 488 in 2009 to seek local opinion and help better inform our decision making process. The consultation generated a lot of local interest in the proposals with around 74% of respondents supporting the proposals to extend the route. Further details on this consultation can be found on the TfL website.

Route 76

Currently buses on route 76 heading towards Tottenham go along Stamford Road. Going towards Waterloo buses go along Kingsland High Road and Englefield Road. Following changes to the streetscape in Kingsland High Road, we consulted residents in Englefield and Stamford Roads regarding our proposal to run buses in both directions along Englefield Road.

Streetscape work to help protect trees from passing vehicles and to install new bus stops has now been completed. Therefore from 4 June 2011 buses will run in both directions along Englefield Road serving a new bus stop in each direction.

Overview

The London bus network is kept under regular review. As part of this, we develop proposals for changes to services.

We recently consulted on proposals to extend route 488 to Dalston and have now reached a decision.

Subject to the completion of the necessary traffic management consultation and any resulting works by Hackney Council, route 488 will be extended to Dalston.

The extended route will provide:

  • A new daily service for Kenninghall Road, Rendlesham Road, Downs Road and parts of Shacklewell Lane
  • A new direct link between Dalston and Clapton
  • Direct links to Tube and Docklands Light Railway services from Bow (Bow Road Tube/Bow Church DLR)
  • Direct links to London Overground services from Hackney Wick, Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland

Route 488 will be operated by East London Bus Group.

Buses will run every 12 minutes during the day Monday to Saturday, and every 15 minutes on Sundays and in the evening.

New 10.2 metre single-deck buses with cleaner and quiteter modern engines will be used on the route.

We hope to start running buses along the extended route from late summer 2010, subject to the completion of Hackney Council's consultation on traffic management changes and bus stop locations.

Around 74 per cent of respondents supported the proposals to extend the route.
