Section 8: St Paul’s Way to Dod Street

Overview

This section of Burdett Road is more residential with more on street parking. The area around Limehouse Cut has seen new homes and other developments being built recently. Our proposals here will see a new segregated cycleway linking to existing cycle routes and a new pedestrian crossing.

Summary of proposals

  • A new 20mph speed limit on Burdett Road and traffic calming measures
  • Segregated two-way cycle track on Burdett Road (between St Paul’s Way and Dod Street)
  • New traffic restrictions, including changes to parking and loading restrictions and banned turns on some side streets
  • Removal of at any time parking and parking bays by Limehouse Cut
  • No entry into Thomas Road except cyclists (vehicle access via Bow Common Lane or Upper North Street). Left turn out exit only on to Burdett Road
  • Agnes Street to be closed to all general traffic except cyclists (vehicle access via Pixley Street/Copenhagen Place)
  • Closure of Dod Street at the junction with Burdett Road (expect cyclists) to reduce cycle/vehicle conflict. Dod Street junction with Stainsby Street to be reopened
  • Upgrades to existing pedestrian crossings, making it easier and safer to cross the road for pedestrians
  • New pedestrian refuge island adjacent to Agnes Street to improve safety for pedestrian crossing Burdett Road
  • New and improved public and green spaces, including new paving and trees
  • Changes to some bus lanes, bus stop layouts and locations, including new bus stop bypasses for cyclists (find out more about bus stop bypasses)
  • Road resurfacing providing a more comfortable surface for cyclists, pedestrians and buses
  • Upgrade to pavement materials to enhance and improve public realm
  • Link to existing cycling routes - CS2 and CS3

Improvements for cycling

  • Segregated two-way cycle track on Burdett Road (between St Paul’s Way and Dod Street). The track would be 3 metres wide, the segregating kerb would be a minimum of 0.5 metres wide
  • Removal of left turn for vehicles from Burdett Road into Thomas Road to remove ‘left hook’  type collisions
  • Cycle priority provided through St Thomas Road junction
  • Link to existing cycling routes, CS2 and CS3

Improvements for walking

  • Agnes Street junction with Burdett Road closed to all traffic (except cyclists) creating more space for pedestrians with new trees
  • The road at the crossing near Thomas Street will be raised to make it easier and safer to cross the road for mobility impaired pedestrians
  • New landscaping on cycle segregating island along Burdett Road to improve urban realm

Changes to Buses

  • New northbound bus lane on Burdett Road on the approach to the junction with St Paul’s Way to be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Existing southbound bus stop WP (north of Thomas Road)to be relocated 60m north with a new bypass for cyclists
  • Existing northbound bus stop WQ (north of Pixley Street) to be relocated 16m north
  • Bus Stop MA (St Paul’s Way) to be removed to accommodate new cycle track. Closest stops would be 140m north (Stop MB) or 150m south (Stop WQ)
  • Operational hours of existing southbound bus lane between Thomas Road and Dodd Street to be extended to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (taxis, cycles and motor cycles permitted)
  • Northbound bus lane from the Post Office to Lidl removed to accommodate segregated cycle track

Changes to road design and layout

  • Existing cycle hire docking station to be relocated on to the adjacent the segregation island
  • Thomas Road junction with Burdett Road to be converted to left turn out only
  • Agnes Street to be closed to all general traffic except cyclists (vehicle access via Pixley Street/Copenhagen Place)
  • Closure of Dod Street at the junction with Burdett Road (expect cyclists) to reduce cycle/vehicle conflict. Dod Street junction with Stainsby Street to be reopened

Changes to Parking and loading

  • Existing taxi electric charging bay relocated south of St. Paul’s Way (from opposite Mile End Park Leisure Centre)
  • New 15 metre at any time loading bay for cycle hire refill, located south of the relocated Santander cycle stands
  • Loading bay outside Tesco’s to be repositioned with hours of operation to remain unchanged
  •  All at any time parking bays on Burdett Road, between St. Paul’s Way and Thomas Road  to be removed to accommodate new cycle track
  • Removal of parking bay northbound(south of the Lidl car park access
