Barclays Cycle Superhighway Route 2 extension – Bow roundabout to Stratford Town Centre
Barclays Cycle Superhighways are cycle routes running between outer and central London. They provide new cycle lanes and other dedicated infrastructure so that cyclists can enjoy swift, direct, safer journeys around the city.
We recently consulted on proposals to introduce an extension to a cycle route between Stratford town centre and Bow roundabout. Barclays Cycle Superhighway Route 2 (CS2) will run between Stratford and Aldgate via Bow, Mile End, Stepney Green and Whitechapel.
Having analysed the responses to consultation and reviewed the proposals in light of the Mayor’s new Vision for Cycling in London, we have decided to make changes to some parts of the previous proposals. These changes are detailed in our Response to consultation, along with a summary of the responses. Further details can be found in the 'Results' section at the bottom of this page.
What are we consulting on?
Consultation on Barclays Cycle Superhighway Route 2 extension – Bow roundabout to Stratford Town Centre has now closed. The consultation ran between 7 January and 11 February 2013.
Proposed road layout changes
The new route would bring substantial changes to the road layout to improve safety for cyclists, including:
- 3km of new cycle lanes, including 2.4km segregated cycle lane along Stratford High Street
- Improved road surfaces and fewer obstructions to make cycling more comfortable
- New road markings and signs showing journey times and links to existing cycle routes
- New innovative bus stop and traffic signal bypasses to help cyclists get ahead of other traffic and improve safety
- Over 400 new cycle parking spaces along the route
- Cycle safety checks
- Free cycle training
- Industry-recognised safety training for drivers of large goods vehicles

Following a positive response to consultation, we’re proceeding with the proposed extension to Barclays Cycle Superhighway Route 2. However in response to feedback, we’ve made a number of changes.
Changes to cycle bus stop bypasses include additional road markings to alert pedestrians and cyclists to look out for each other and bus driver training. We will closely monitor CS2, especially trial designs such as cycle bus stop bypasses through on street surveys and video monitoring. We will make further modifications if required. We will continue to work closely with disability groups to further develop our designs for cycle bus stop bypasses.
Changes to Stratford gyratory include a tighter turn into Tramway Avenue to help slow traffic. We are withdrawing our proposal for a cycle contraflow facility on West Ham Lane following discussion with stakeholders and wider aspirations of Newham Council in this area. We will continue to work closely with Newham Council on their plans to remove Stratford gyratory and will continue to discuss widerimprovements in the Bow roundabout area with key stakeholder groups.
We’re planning to start construction in late June 2013. The extension is scheduled to open later this year.
