Initial improvements in Camberwell town centre
We are continuing discussions with Southwark Council regarding the final plans for CS5 in Camberwell and its wider town centre regeneration scheme. More information will be available soon. Ahead of that, we will deliver initial improvements for cyclists in Camberwell in early 2014.
Our initial plans in Camberwell include:
Introduction of 20mph speed limit through Camberwell town centre (Medlar Street - Benhill Road)
New sections of advisory and mandatory cycle lane, including moving traffic islands at the junction to make room for cycle lanes
ASLs extended to 7.5m deep at junctions with Camberwell Road/Denmark Hill and Artichoke Place and 5m deep at junction with Benhill Rd.
We no longer plan to introduce a left turn only lane from Camberwell New Road into Camberwell Green as part of the first phase of CS5.

Description of original proposals:
New 20mph speed limit in Camberwell town centre: We’re proposing to introduce a 20mph speed limit across Camberwell town centre. It would run on Camberwell New Road and Camberwell Church Street from Medlar Street to the east of the junction of Benhill Road and on Camberwell Road and Denmark Hill from Medlar Street to south of Love Walk. This would increase safety for all road users. The 20mph speed limit area would be indicated by signage.
New mandatory and advisory cycle lanes: We’re proposing new cycle lanes between 1.5 metres and 2 metres wide in order to provide dedicated space for cyclists.
Two options for cyclists on Camberwell Church Street:
Option one includes a 1.5 metre advisory cycle lane in both directions. This is TfL’s preferred option as it provides dedicated space for cyclists in both directions.
Option two is a two metre mandatory cycle lane eastbound (towards Peckham) and CS5 logos in the centre of a 3.8 metre traffic lane westbound (towards Oval). This would provide a wide dedicated space for eastbound cyclists.
Both options also propose removing the traffic lights at the Grove Lane junction and replacing with a toucan crossing, as well as allowing cyclists to enter Grove Lane from Camberwell Church Street.
Two options for westbound cyclists on Camberwell New Road:
Option one is a four metre wide traffic lane, incorporating a 1.5 metre strip of blue cycle surfacing. This is TfL’s preferred option as it would raise motorist awareness of cyclists and would leave enough space for vehicles and cyclists to pass each other.
Option two includes an extended southern footway and a 3 metre traffic lane with CS5 logos in the centre of the road to show the route for westbound cyclists.
Changing road layout at Camberwell New Road/Camberwell Church Street/Denmark Hill junction: We’re proposing to change the lane allocations on Camberwell New Road heading eastbound (towards Peckham) to make the nearside traffic lane left turn only at the junction of Denmark Hill. This would reduce the potential for conflict between cyclists and motorists and would leave motorists in the correct position to pass the bus lane on Camberwell New Road. The proposals will undergo traffic modelling analysis to assess the impact on traffic capacity. Initial analysis suggests there would be some increase in queuing at busy times.
Changing the nearside lane on Camberwell New Road to left turn only would mean that only one traffic lane would be needed at the entrance to Camberwell Church Street.
Extended Advanced Stop Lines (ASLs) at Camberwell New Road/Camberwell Church Street/Denmark Hill junction: We’re proposing an 8 metre Advanced Stop Line on Camberwell New Road at the junction with Denmark Hill to help cyclists wait ahead of other traffic. We’re also proposing 5 metre ASLs on all other arms of the junction.
Road resurfacing: We’re proposing to replace the road surfacing on Camberwell Church Street between Datchelor Place and Vicarage Grove. We’re also proposing to resurface sections of bus and cycle lane on Camberwell New Road and Camberwell Church Street. This would provide a smoother surface and increase safety for all road users.
