The cycle routes that used to be called Cycle Superhighways and Quietways are now known as Cycleways. These are routes that link communities, businesses and destinations across London in one cycle network. We received 45 responses to the consultation, of which 80% supported or partially supported our proposals.
Having considered the responses, we intend to proceed with the scheme. However, we have made some changes to the design on Globe Street following discussion with the London Borough of Southwark, which is delivering the Quietway along the remainder of Globe Street.
The works are planned to start in early May 2015.
Read the consultation report.
What are we proposing?
As part of the Quietways programme, Transport for London (TfL) is developing proposals to enhance facilities for cyclists without adversely affecting other road users.
The Great Dover Street and Globe Street junction is on the proposed Waterloo to Greenwich Quietway. The proposals include increasing space for cyclists, enlarging footways and reshaping traffic islands, and adding more cycle parking space. See proposed junction design changes below for details.
We are working in conjunction with the London boroughs and other key stakeholders to deliver the entire route. The London Borough of Southwark has already consulted on proposed improvements to borough roads around the junction and further information can be found here (Site J).
The TfL proposed consultation junction plan can be seen here.
Why are we proposing this?
We are determined to ensure London’s roads are safer for cyclists. Great Dover Street and Globe Street is a busy junction and the proposed modified junction reflects the emerging improvements in cycling infrastructure design standards including to:
Proposed junction design changes
We are proposing these changes to the junction to create enhanced space for cycling improvements. Please refer to the consultation junction plan here.
* This will be allowed in the revised Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (2015) to be published in March 2015.
The consultation junction plan shows the indicative proposals, but the extent of the works may vary from that shown following detailed design.
The proposed consultation junction plan can be seen here.
How would the proposals affect other road users?
Other road users will not be adversely affected by the proposals. Traffic modeling indicates that there will not be any noticeable delays to traffic or pedestrians using the junction.
Construction work
Subject to the outcome of this consultation, we plan to start construction work in early 2015. Construction will cause some disruption, although we will work to minimise the impact as much as possible. We will write to local residents and businesses before undertaking work in this area.
