C8 Upgrade North Phase 1 - Chelsea Bridge to Lambeth Bridge

Overview

In May and June 2020 we made the following temporary changes: 

  • Installed barriers to segregate the existing with-flow cycle lanes from traffic, as we expect a significant uplift in the number of cyclists using this route as people begin to return to normal
  • Banned the left turns from Grosvenor Road onto Chelsea Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge, except for cyclists
  • Banned the left turn from Grosvenor Road into Claverton Street, except for buses and cycles
  • Banned the left turn from Grosvenor Road into St George’s Square
  • Introduced low level cycle signals for westbound cyclists at Vauxhall Bridge
  • Introduced a 6.5m westbound bus lane on the approach to Vauxhall Bridge (formalising existing bus and cycle movements)
  • Suspended westbound coach parking opposite the Tate Britain  

Although we are not undertaking a formal consultation on any Streetspace schemes, we would like to know about your experiences of them. We will continue to monitor the effects of these temporary changes over the coming months. This includes their effects on traffic flow, road safety and cycling and walking rates. We have written to local people, businesses and other stakeholders to explain what changes we have made and encouraged them to provide us their views and experiences of the changes. We will listen carefully to the feedback we receive.
