Section 6 – Evelyn Street / Oxestalls Road

Closed 19 Nov 2017

Opened 28 Sep 2017

Overview

Evelyn Street is currently dominated by motor traffic and can be an intimidating and unpleasant place to cycle and walk. The proposals would give people space and time to cycle through the area more easily, and make it easier to cross the road at dedicated crossing points.

These improvements would help to make these streets work better for cycling and walking, so both individuals in the area and the community as a whole can benefit.

Summary of proposals

  • Segregated two-way cycle track on the north side of Evelyn Street
  • Wider footway outside Deptford Park Primary school and new 6-metre wide toucan crossing (for pedestrians and cyclists) across Oxestalls Road
  • Changes to bus lanes and some bus stops including removing stop U at Grinstead Road
  • New mini roundabout at Oxestalls Road, replacing traffic light controlled junction
  • Removal of centre line markings along some parts of Evelyn Street to improve road safety
  • New double yellow line restrictions

Improvements for cycling

  • Segregated two-way cycle track on the north side of Evelyn Street replaces westbound bus lane between Bestwood Street and Grinstead Road
  • The two-way cycle track would be 3 to 3.5 metres wide and the segregating kerb would be a minimum of 0.5 metres wide
  • Segregated two-way cycle track would enter Oxestalls Road, and cyclists would use a new 6-metre wide toucan crossing (for pedestrians and cyclists) to continue
  • Segregated two-way cycle track bypasses Grinstead Road junction
  • Cycle priority provided across all side roads through raised junction treatments to reduce the speed of turning vehicles. Contrasting surfacing would be used at some side roads to remind motorists of the presence of cyclists

Improvements for walking

  • Wider footway on Evelyn Street and Oxestalls Road outside Deptford Park Primary School
  • All pedestrian crossings widened, plus a new 6-metre wide toucan crossing (for pedestrians and cyclists) across Oxestalls Road
  • Pedestrian crossing on the eastern arm of the Oxestalls Road junction moved 150 metres east to accommodate future pedestrian demand from housing development

Changes to buses

  • Westbound bus lane between Bestwood Street and Grinstead Road replaced by the two-way cycle track
  • Eastbound bus stop U at Grinstead Road removed. This would provide more equal distance between the bus stops along Evelyn Street
  • Westbound bus stop N at Bestwood Street moved 35 metres west
  • Eastbound bus stops on the north side of Evelyn Street would have bypasses for cyclists. These stops are eastbound stop at Bestwood Street and stop T at Deptford Park School (find out more about bus stop bypasses)

Road design and layout

  • New mini roundabout replaces traffic light controlled junction at Oxestalls Road to improve traffic flow along Evelyn Street
  • Centre line makings removed between Bestwood Street and Grinstead Road to encourage lower vehicle speeds and improve road safety

Parking and loading

  • Double yellow lines replace single yellow line on Evelyn Street between Bestwood Street and Grinstead Road
