Section J – Brentford High Street (West)

Closed 31 Oct 2017

Opened 21 Sep 2017

Overview

Brentford High Street is currently dominated by motor traffic and can be an intimidating and unpleasant place to cycle and walk. Our proposals would give people space and time to cycle through the area more easily, and make it easier to cross the road at dedicated crossing points. We would also and add more greenery, for example by planting new trees.

These improvements would help to make these streets work better for cycling and walking, so both individuals in the area and the community as a whole can benefit.

Proposals would extend from the Ealing Road junction to Alexandra Road, at which point they would facilitate safe access for cycling back into the carriageway before the junction with Dock Road. We plan to extend CS9 west of this point in future. Developing transformative proposals of this nature requires careful planning, to ensure they meet the needs of the local community and integrate with future developments. TfL and the London Borough of Hounslow are working together to develop proposals for CS9 through Brentford and further west towards Hounslow. We expect to launch public consultation on this section in 2018.

Detailed proposals for the section from Ealing Road to Dock Road (where a proposed major redevelopment of the south side of Brentford High Street would begin) have been developed and are proposed for initial consultation here.

Once proposals for the remainder of CS9 along Brentford High Street and towards Hounslow are developed, we will complete detailed traffic modelling of this section and present these at public consultation in 2018. Click here for more information on the predicted traffic impacts of CS9 from Kensington Olympia to Brentford (Ealing Road).

Proposals include:

  • New signalised pedestrian crossing at Alexandra Road
  • Stepped cycle tracks on Brentford High Street from Ealing Road to Dock Road
  • Changes to bus stops and bus stop bypasses for cyclists
  • Changes to loading on Brentford High Street
  • Urban space improvements, including planting new trees

New signalised pedestrian crossing

  • A new signalised pedestrian crossing would be provided west of Alexandra Road, by Brentford County Court
  • This would replace existing unsignalised pedestrian refuges in the area

Stepped cycle tracks on Brentford High Street from Ealing Road to Dock Road

  • The new cycle tracks would be at least 1.5 metres wide in each direction
  • They would replace advisory cycle lane, some general traffic space and some footway
  • Raised entry treatments / continuous footway treatemnets would be added at side roads, to reduce vehicle speeds at entrances to unsignalised side roads. Coloured surfacing would only be used to highlight the presence of cyclists at unsignalised side roads to vehicles. Cycle logos would be used at side roads to highlight the presence of cyclists.
  • The lighting on Brentford High Street would be assessed and brought up to British Standards if required

Changes to bus stops and bus stop bypasses for cyclists

  • Eastbound stop BP at Brentford County Court would be moved approximately 170 metres east. This would ensure there would be space for vehicles to overtake buses stopped at westbound stop BK opposite. This stop is served by bus routes 235, 237, and 195. Bus stops will be retained at intervals of 400 metres in line with accessibility requirements
  • Eastbound stop BP and westbound stops BK at Brentford County Court and BJ at Goat Wharf would be converted to bus stop bypasses

Changes to loading on Brentford High Street

  • Loading bays on the northern side of Brentford High Street opposite Goat Wharf would be re-located adjacent the cycle track. Only goods vehicles would be permitted to load for 20 minutes, no return within one hour, from 10am – 4pm Monday – Saturday
  • Loading bays on the southern side of Brentford High Street by Ferry Lane would be re-located adjacent the cycle track. Only goods vehicles would be permitted to load for 20 minutes, no return within one hour, from 10am – 4pm Monday – Saturday

Urban space improvements, including planting new trees

  • We would plant new street trees where possible on Brentford High Street. We have identified potential locations for new trees in the central island by Ealing Road. We are assessing these areas (and underground and soil conditions) to inform a decision on planting trees here
  • We would re-pave some footways to provide a smoother walking surface
  • Some cycle parking stands would be relocated and new stands installed at appropriate locations. We would increase the overall number of cycle parking stands near CS9
