Improvements for cycling

  • Segregated two-way cycle track on the north side of Jamaica Road, replacing westbound general traffic lane between Major Road and Wilson Grove and westbound bus lane between Wilson Grove and Cherry Garden Street
  • The two-way cycle track would be 3 to 4 metres wide and the segregating kerb would be a minimum of 0.5 metres wide
  • Segregated two-way cycle track crosses to the south side of Jamaica Road at the junction with Southwark Park Road
  • Cycle priority provided across all side roads through raised junction treatments to reduce the speed of turning vehicles. Contrasting surfacing would be used at some side roads to remind motorists of the presence of cyclists

Improvements for walking

  • Pedestrian crossing outside Bermondsey Station widened to 8 metres and made more direct. We predict pedestrian wait times will be over a minute less in the morning and evening peaks
  • Wider pedestrian crossings on all arms of the Southwark Park Road junction
  • New toucan crossing (for pedestrians and cyclists) outside Jamaica Road entrance to Southwark Park

Changes to buses

  • Westbound bus lane between Wilson Grove and Cherry Garden Street would be replaced by two-way cycle track
  • Eastbound bus lane extended to start immediately after the Southwark Park Road junction
  • New 50 metres of westbound bus lane starting from Prospect Street replaces westbound general traffic lane
  • Eastbound bus stop E at Drummond Road on the north side of Jamaica Road would have a bypass for cyclists (find out more about bus stop bypasses)

Road design and layout

  • Westbound general traffic lane between Major Road and Wilson Grove  replaced by the two-way cycle track
  • No entry into Marigold Street from Jamaica Road to improve safety for all road users, in particular reducing the number of vehicles turning across the cycle track. Our traffic counts show this movement is made by 40 vehicles per day
  • 80 metres of westbound general traffic lane starting from Prospect Street replaced by bus lane
  • Central reservation island narrowed between Major Road and Cathay Street to accommodate two-way cycle track
  • Cathay Street becomes one-way northbound to help remove through-traffic from residential roads. Our traffic counts show the southbound movement is made by a maximum of 160 vehicles per hour
  • We would also allow the right turn into Cathay Street from Jamaica Road to improve local access

Parking and loading

  • Loading and disabled parking bay next to 166-174 Jamaica Road moved 18 metres west, next to 160-166 Jamaica Road, and shortened by 4 metres
  • Loading and disabled parking bay next to 184-188 Jamaica Road moved 22 metres east, next to 192-198 Jamaica Road, and extended by 3 metres
  • Loading and disabled parking bay next to 202-208 Jamaica Road removed
  • Parking bay next to 224 Jamaica Road moved outside the two-way cycle track and shortened by 4 metres
  • Loading and disabled parking bay next to 236-250 Jamaica Road moved outside the two-way cycle track
