Have your say on proposed changes to the A406 North Circular between Chiswick Roundabout and Popes Lane

Closed 20 Mar 2016

Opened 4 Feb 2016

Results Updated 8 Aug 2016

Between 4 February and 20 March 2016 we consulted on a set of proposed changes to a section of the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue from Chiswick Roundabout to Popes Lane.

We received 139 responses to the consultation from both members of the public and stakeholders.

75 per cent of people who responded to the corresponding closed question said they supported or partially supported our proposals. 24 per cent answered ‘No’ and 1 per cent answered ‘Not sure.’

Having reviewed these results and the detailed comments provided by respondents, we have decided to make some amendments to the proposals:

  • We will not proceed with the permanent shared use area besides the eastern carriageway
  • We will reduce the extent of road widening that would have been required on the eastern carriageway

We intend to proceed with all other elements of the proposals and to begin construction in summer 2017, subject to funding. We will contact residents, businesses and property occupiers with relevant information before the start of any construction work in their area.

End of update

Update - 26 February 2016

The deadline for this consultation has been extended until Sunday 20 March 2016.

Updated information on the extent of grass verge required to accommodate the new central reservation has been added to our consultation proposals. Please refer to the ‘Road widening’ section below.

Update ends

We were seeking your views on proposed changes to a section of the A406 North Circular from Chiswick Roundabout to Popes Lane.

These changes would involve the construction of a central reservation to prevent right turning collisions at side roads and vehicles using the oncoming lanes to overtake. We would also introduce a 30mph speed limit on this section of the road, where there is already a northbound and southbound safety (speed) camera. The proposals have been developed in response to the high number of collisions that have been recorded on this section of road.

As well as the installation of a central reservation, we are proposing to improve the existing cycle and pedestrian facilities along this section of the A406.

Why we proposed this

The aim of the central reservation and related safety measures is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by traffic collisions on this section of road. We have developed these proposals in response to the high number of collisions and near misses observed on the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue between Chiswick Roundabout and Popes Lane.

Other elements of the proposals, including wider footways, are designed to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

The following is a summary of all of the proposed changes:

  • Install a central reservation that would connect the existing central reservation at the approach to Chiswick Roundabout with another beginning at the turn off for Park Way. Right turns would not be possible to and from adjoining roads and road-side properties on the northbound or southbound carriageway, but would still be permitted at either Chiswick Roundabout or the turning facility adjacent to Park Place Drive
  • Reduce the speed limit between Popes Lane and Chiswick Roundabout from 40mph to 30mph to improve safety and provide consistency with adjoining sections of the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue
  • Improve cycle and pedestrian facilities by:
    • Widening the existing shared footways on the eastern side of the carriageway.
    • Widening the existing two-way segregated cycle track on the western side of the carriageway to provide sufficient space for pedestrians and cycles
    • Widening the footway on Larch Drive and a short section of the northbound A406, and adjusting the position of the traffic island to provide sufficient space for shared pedestrian and cycle use
  • Review the condition and position of the existing trees and where necessary replace or plant new ones. There would be no overall reduction in the number of trees

Road Widening

Our proposals would require us to widen a section of the southbound A406 carriageway, meaning the existing grass verge would be narrowed. In other areas we are able to widen the grass verge.

  • Between the Chiswick roundabout and Power Road the road would be widened by no more than 1.1m and in most cases by less.
  • Between Power Road and Manor Gardens it would widened by no more than 1.9m (and in most cases less)
  • Between Manor Gardens and Park Place it would be widened by no more than 1.8m
  • Between Park Place and Park Way it would be widened by no more than 1.3m

Subject to the results of this consultation, construction could start in early 2017.

We would seek to coordinate all necessary construction works with those already underway to replace the existing pedestrian and road bridge at Power Road with one single structure. All disruption will be kept to a minimum.
