Have your say on a proposed extension to the coach parking bays on Park Lane

Results updated 18 Mar 2016

Overall, we received 104 responses, with 65% of those supporting or partially supporting the scheme. Positive comments included general support for additional coach parking provision in London. Negative comments included concern that a nearby bus stop was being moved too away from the subway entrance/exit.

Conclusion and next steps:

Having considered the responses received, we will proceed with extending the coach parking bays on Park Lane. However, as the main concern raised during consultation was the distance between the bus stop and the subway entrance, we will instead introduce a 30 metre coach parking bay instead of the originally-proposed 45 metre bay.  This would still provide additional coach parking, whilst allowing the bus stop to stay closer to the subway entrance, meaning bus passengers would have less of a distance to walk

We plan to extend the coach bay by the end of Spring 2016.

Overview

Update 18 March 2016

In November 2015 we consulted on proposals to introduce an additional 45 metres of coach parking on the north side of Park Lane. This proposed extension to existing coach parking would replace some of the coach parking that was removed from Victoria Embankment because of the East-West Cycle Superhighway.

End of update

We proposed to extend the existing paid coach parking bays on Park Lane by 45 metres. This extension will replace some of the coach parking bays that will be removed from Victoria Embankment for the East-West Cycle Superhighway in order to meet the needs of coach travellers and operators.

We chose Park Lane because it is in the heart of central London and already provides coach parking bays.

What we proposed

The bays will be on the west (northbound) side of the road, extending the existing coach parking bays by 45 metres to provide space for an additional three large coaches.

It will operate in the following way:

  • Coaches will be allowed to park from 08:30 to midnight each day
  • Charges levied by Westminster City Council will apply from 08:30 to 18:30 Monday to Friday and from 08:30 to 13:30 on Saturday
  • Coaches will be allowed to park for a maximum of two hours during operating times and would not be permitted to return within one hour

These operating and charging times and the rate of charges will be consistent with the existing coach parking bays on Park Lane.

The existing bus stop and the 67 metre long bus stop clearway will be moved to the north, replacing existing single red line provision. The bus shelter will be relocated accordingly and extended so there is more space for customers to wait for buses. There will be a slightly longer walk between the bus stop and the entrances and exits to the park and the subway under Park Lane. There will be about 30 metres of road between the end of the bus stop area and the entrance to the underground car park, which will allow for safe movement of buses from the stop and vehicles entering the car park.
