Proposed bus lane changes southbound on Streatham Hill

Results updated 1 Feb 2017

Between 21 July and 14 September 2016, we consulted on proposals for introducing new sections of southbound bus lane in the Streatham Hill area as part of our London-wide Bus Priority Programme.

We received 246 responses to the consultation, of which 76 per cent supported and 11 per cent partially supported our proposals. In addition, 8 per cent of respondents did not support the proposals, 3 per cent said they were not sure, 2 per cent said they had no opinion, and  less than 1 per cent did not answer the question.

Having considered all the responses to consultation, we have decided to go ahead with the scheme without any changes to the proposals we consulted on.

We plan to start construction in March 2017, and we will write to affected properties before starting any works.

What are we proposing?

To reduce bus journey times and improve bus journey reliability, we are proposing to extend the length and increase the hours of operation of the southbound bus lane on Streatham Hill.

During hours of operation, the new bus lanes would be open to buses, cycles, motorcycles, taxis, and other vehicles with more than 14 seats. Outside these times, the lanes would be open to all vehicles:

  • We would convert a general traffic lane into a new southbound bus lane starting at the entrance to the Arriva bus depot and ending at the junction with Barcombe Avenue. The bus lane would operate Monday-Friday 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm
  • We would extend the operating hours for the existing section of bus lane on Streatham Hill starting after the junction with Barcombe Avenue and ending before the junction with Amesbury Avenue. The operating hours would be extended from Monday-Friday 4pm-7pm to Monday-Friday 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm

Our proposals do not affect the parking/loading bays on this section of Streatham Hill, which would continue to be available at off-peak times.

Note, there is also a consultation taking place currently on improvements for buses on Brixton Hill. Visit for more information and to respond.
