A117 Manor Way / A1020 Pier Road – proposed road improvements

Closed 20 Nov 2017

Opened 5 Oct 2017

We are proposing changes on the A117 Woolwich Manor Way and A1020 Pier Road. The scheme aims to improve conditions for walking, cycling and using public transport, and to reduce vehicle speeds.

In summary, the proposals include:

Improved ferry access and bus interchange

  • Reconfigured pedestrian islands and wider pavements at the ferry entrance / exit to make it easier for passengers to leave / board the ferry via a more direct route
  • This also provides a more convenient and spacious walking route to the bus stop
  • Additional parking for ferry operators

Bus improvements

  • New bus shelter
  • Reconfigured bus turning area

Cycle facilities

  • A 1.5 metre cycle lane on a new section of Pier Road which replaces a 0.9m wide cycle lane. The central reservation would be narrowed to accommodate this.

Changes to junction at Fishguard Way

  • The signalised junction and pedestrian crossings at Fishguard Way would be converted to a roundabout with zebra crossings.  This will reduce traffic speeds and help the junction operate more efficiently and safely. We expect the proposals would reduce the time people have to wait to cross the road
  • The scheme would also provide compliant tactile paving for visually impaired road users. A small section of the pedestrian guard rail would be retained to encourage people to use the dedicated crossing points, while the rest of the guard rail would be removed in accordance with TfL policy to keep guardrail only where it meets specific safety criteria.
