A2 Old Kent Road - Improved traffic flow proposals

Closed 27 Feb 2012

Opened 6 Feb 2012

Overview

Transport for London (TfL) has developed proposals to improve journey time reliability, and ensure more free-flowing travel on all major routes in and out of London.

The A2 Old Kent Road (Bricklayers –Glengall Road) section has been identified as a route that would benefit from journey time reliability improvements.

TfL conducted parking and loading bay surveys in September 2011 to monitor the use of the bays and we found that approximately half of the parking and loading bays were not used correctly or legally. We also knowthere is a high volume of traffic flow at this section of the Old Kent Road and in order to minimise congestion we are proposing the following improvements (as shown on the below plan):

  • Removal of loading and parking bays at specific locations
  • Reducing the lengths of several loading and parking bays at specific locations
  • Introducing additional CCTV cameras to enforce new and existing parking bays.

These improvements aim to improve the movement of traffic, relieving bottlenecks and reducing pollution caused by congestion at various points on this stretch of road. The introduction of CCTV will also reduce illegal parking allowing the bays to be used legally as intended.
