Camden Town Station Capacity Upgrade (2015)

Closed 11 Dec 2015

Opened 12 Oct 2015

Results Updated 9 Mar 2016

We recently consulted on proposals to substantially upgrade the capacity of Camden Town Station.

We received 1744 responses to the consultation. 1718 were from members of the public and 26 responses were from stakeholders and interest groups. 95% of respondents agreed there was a need for a capacity upgrade of the station.

A full report detailing our analysis of the consultation and our response to the main issues raised is available below.

Engagement on the proposals is ongoing. Since the consultation closed in December 2015 we have engaged further with Camden Council and other stakeholders.

We anticipate a second round of consultation later in 2016 on a possible new building above the proposed second entrance of the station. We also anticipate a third round of consultation in 2017 on the design of the proposals, before we apply for permission to carry out the capacity upgrade through a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO).

If you have any questions regarding the consultation please contact us at camdentownupgrade@tfl.gov.uk.

End of update

We proposed to substantially upgrade the capacity of Camden Town station, and would like to hear your views.

More and more people have been using the station, with a 60% increase over the
past 10 years. At peak times there is congestion for people entering and leaving,
and for those changing trains. We regularly have to send customers down spiral stairs, make the station exit only, or hold people outside the ticket gates. If we do nothing these measures will become more frequent. The station needs improving
so that it can properly support the vibrant local community and economy.

We believe our customers would benefit from:

  • a new second entrance and exit to the station
  • more escalators
  • step-free access from the street to trains
  • more space to change between trains

A possible site for a new station entrance would be on Buck Street, between Camden High Street and Kentish Town Road. It would lead to three new escalators and two lifts. Below ground there would be more space to change between trains. This would in turn enable future capacity benefits on the Northern line.

Indicative view of proposed second entrance and exit

A new second entrance will reduce walking distances between the station and the north part of Camden Town, including Camden Lock. The existing station entrance would stay as it is, with no need for any changes to nearby buildings. Work could start from 2019.
